KA_PYROCLASTIC_R&D

🌋 High-Resolution Large-Scale Pyroclastic Simulation

In this project, I had the opportunity to work on a high-resolution pyroclastic simulation, focusing on creating a visually striking and detailed fluid dynamics effect. Pyroclastic flows, typically associated with volcanic eruptions, present unique challenges when simulating them in 3D software. The goal of this simulation was to not only achieve realistic fluid dynamics but also push the boundaries of simulation technology in Houdini.

🔧 Key Highlights:

  • ⏳ Slow-Motion Detail
The simulation was rendered at varying speeds to capture the full detail of the pyroclastic flow. The second version was rendered at half speed, allowing for a more intricate view of the fluid’s behavior as it interacts with its environment.

  • 💨 Fluid Dynamics at Scale
Simulating large-scale fluid behavior like pyroclastic flows requires a combination of high-resolution particle-based methods and fine control over the simulation parameters. By focusing on both the size and the level of detail, I was able to achieve a result that balances realism with artistic flair.

  • 💻 Technological Advancements in Houdini
This project pushed the limits of Houdini’s fluid simulation capabilities. With detailed control over the simulation parameters, the goal was to push the boundaries of what can be achieved with procedural simulations in a 3D environment.

🚧 The Challenge:
Simulating large-scale pyroclastic flows in a way that feels organic and realistic is no easy feat. To achieve a highly detailed result, I had to balance computational power with creative design. The end result is a visually stunning and highly detailed pyroclastic simulation that showcases the power of Houdini’s fluid dynamics system. By pushing the limits of both detail and scale, this project exemplifies how procedural techniques can be used to create dynamic, large-scale simulations that are both artistically captivating and technically precise.

KA_SUPERGIANTS_R&D

🌟 Supergiant Stars Simulated in Houdini

This is one of my R&D projects created for the film His Master’s Voice: a visual exploration of six different types of supergiant stars.

Since the Sun is the only star we can observe up close in detail, our understanding of other stars relies heavily on theoretical models and spectral data. The goal here was to present different visual concepts of what these stellar giants might look like, combining scientific inspiration with artistic interpretation.

All simulations were done in Houdini, using a range of techniques:
☄️ Volume simulations for internal turbulence and stellar atmosphere
⚡ Plasma and magnetic field setups to drive surface activity and flares
🔥 Custom shading to express heat, radiation, and energetic matter flows

These simulations were later integrated into the film as background elements, but they also stand on their own as a conceptual visualization of cosmic phenomena we can’t yet directly observe — not even with our best telescopes.

KA_4K_NEBULA_R&D

🌌 Houdini & Mantra Nebula R&D – 4K

This is a personal R&D project where I explored nebula creation using Houdini and Mantra. The goal was to achieve a visually rich, cinematic-style volumetric nebula with layered depth and light interaction — all rendered in 4K.

The project gave me valuable insight into volume shader setups, noise layering, light and color harmonies within deep space visuals. While this is an early test, I’m planning to create additional nebulae in the future, building on the knowledge and techniques developed here. Each iteration brings me closer to a more physically inspired and emotionally striking visual result.

Stay tuned — better and more beautiful results are definitely on the way. 🚀

KA_SAND&SNOW

🌾Grain Simulations in Houdini

  1. 🧪 Simulate Material Behavior
Explore the physical properties of sand and snow using Houdini’s Grain Solver, playing with parameters like friction, clumping, cohesion, and break thresholds to mimic real-world granular dynamics.

  2. 🎨 Unleash Solver Versatility
Recreate everything from dry sand sliding down dunes to sticky snow clumping together, showcasing the solver’s power to handle both fluid and rigid granular motion with high realism.

  3. 🌍 Expand Creative Horizons
These tests are part of a wider exploration of granular materials across diverse environments.
More experiments on the way — this solver has far more to offer than meets the eye.

KA_Crystal_R&D

❄️ Holiday R&D – Procedural Crystal Growth with Mantra

A little festive R&D project using my custom-built phyllotaxis asset in Houdini to generate a variety of procedural crystals. Rendered in Mantra, the setup includes several types of crystals inspired by real-world minerals:
✨ Tanzanite
✨ Cyanotrichite
✨ Gold
✨ Pyrite
✨ Blue Fluorite
✨ Brochantite
✨ Chrysocolla

Each crystal was generated procedurally, leveraging the organic and mathematical beauty of phyllotaxis patterns. The goal was to explore complex surface details and light transmission within crystalline structures all while keeping a playful, holiday-inspired tone.

KA_Meteor_R&D

KA_Proxima_Centauri

🪐 Proxima Centauri

A R&D exploration focusing on a red dwarf star, dust simulations, and dynamic stellar amplitudes.
Rendered in Houdini, the system is inspired by Proxima Centauri, the closest known star to the Sun — yet still about 4.24 light-years away. With our current propulsion technologies, it would take over 80,000 years to reach.

This project reflects on both the technical and philosophical aspects of space travel:

Is it ever going to be possible to reach even more distant stars?
Meanwhile, the simulation dives into volumetric dust behavior, glowing plasma shells, and stellar oscillations — all imagined through the lens of visual effects.

KA_ShipWave

KA_TERROR_HÁZA_HŐSÖK_FRONT_VFX

🎬 HŐSÖK — Honored to work with FRONT VFX for the House of Terror Museum

🕊️ I’m incredibly proud to have contributed to the Hősök ("Heroes") project for the House of Terror Museum, commemorating the Hungarian revolution of 1956.

🤝 Working with the team at FRONT VFX on such a historically and emotionally significant project was both an honor and a creative challenge.

💻 I was responsible for various visual effects tasks that helped bring the story of courage and resistance to life - all while respecting the tone and authenticity of this powerful narrative.

🎥 This was more than just a VFX job - it was an opportunity to add visual depth to a national memory and be part of something that resonates beyond the screen.

🇭🇺 To contribute to a piece that pays tribute to real heroes is something I’ll always carry with pride.

KA_Knitting_Tool

KA_Smoke_Trail

Most egy füst szimuláció houdiniben, smoke trail. Update: Lerendereltem szekvenciában is, van hang is alatta. :) Very nice proton model was made Ron L. Long (Zentreon)

Thanks!

Update:

KA_Soft_FX

Dynamic Adaptive Deformer R&D (Houdini & Maya)

Működik egyszerre több objektummal is.. :)

Itt pedig két videó:

KA_Drink_FX

Drink FX for Houdini. Természetesen működhet a hagyományos flip fluid szimulációval is...
